Assistant Lighthouse Keepers Wanted!

The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse has been guiding ships into Portland Harbor since 1897.  You can Step into History guiding current-day visitors from near and far, sharing one of the Portland area’s unique and best-loved landmarks.

Experience is not required.  Before our official season opening in May, we provide a day of training, including lunch, plus opportunities to shadow experienced volunteers.  If you miss the training dates, on the job training can be scheduled with a keeper.

Mission: To preserve the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse while providing public access and education on the history of the lighthouse and Portland Harbor.

The Spring Point Ledge Light Trust is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) Public Charity.

Great lighthouse to visit! Love that they do tours that bring you right up close and personal. Did I mention they take you inside?! Oh yea!! A must in Maine!!

A big thank you to the volunteers that provided our large group private tour on 8/10/13. You made the visit very interesting – excellent job!

The Spring Point Ledge Light Trust is in need of volunteers to help with our Open House events during the summer. Volunteers lead tours, teach visitors about the lighthouse and its historic role in Portland Harbor, and point out the landmarks surrounding the lighthouse. Tours include not only our regular summer weekend openings, but special group tours that arrive via bus and cruise ship. Volunteers also staff the ticket shed at the foot of the breakwater, interacting with passersby and our visitors, serving often as the first point of contact with the public.

Our volunteers receive classroom training and materials before the season opens, usually in May. People joining our team later in the season will receive training materials and individual orientation during regular open house events. New volunteers are paired with an experienced Keeper until they are comfortable with guiding tours. Our goal is to make your experience fun and rewarding.

Volunteers are a critical part of the Trust’s success in maintaining and preserving the lighthouse.  Opening the lighthouse for tours raises all the money needed to sustain the Trust, operate the lighthouse and gift shop and do routine maintenance and repairs.

Sign up today! You’ll enjoy plenty of fresh air and sunshine, meet people from all over the world, and help preserve and promote a wonderful lighthouse that is a gem on the South Portland waterfront.
